SUMMARY:An Evening With Aphra Behn
DESCRIPTION:In a sold-out Anselm Studio 1 on the Canterbury Christ Church University campus\, we were taken back in time for – as the programme put it – a ‘Cornucopial Enticementation of Words by Mrs Aphra Behn with Musick by the finest Composers of her Age’. The evening included scenes and speeches from The Amorous Prince\, The Rover\, The Forc’d Marriage\, The Widow Ranter\, The Emperor of the Moon and Abdelazar\, and music and song by\, among others\, John Blow\, Giovanni Battista Draghi\, John Weldon and Henry Purcell. The production was devised and directed by Dr Chris Price\, CCCU’s Director of Music\, and performed by professional musicians and singers alongside student actors and a staff and student choir. The programme provided a great tasting menu of Aphra’s work: funny\, poignant\, and still exciting nearly four centuries later.

SUMMARY:Masques of Aphra Behn
DESCRIPTION:As part of this year’s Canterbury Festival\, The Aphra Behn Society of Canterbury presented The Masks of Aphra Behn. \nAn audience of around 150 people gathered in St Paul’s-without-the-Walls Church\, Canterbury\, the very church where Aphra’s parents were married\, to enjoy this one-woman show\, written and performed by Claire Louise Amias and using excerpts from Aphra’s letters\, plays and poetry. \nThe audience is waiting; the evening’s performance of The Rover is about to begin. Then the author appears. Unfortunately\, the play has been cancelled. But since we’re all here\, she might as well tell us the story of her life\, her spying mission in the Low Countries\, her dealings with various troublesome men and her struggle to become a professional writer.

SUMMARY:Reading of 'The Dutch Lover'
DESCRIPTION:On 5 October we gathered in St Peter’s Anglican Church in Canterbury to read Aphra Behn’s 1673 play The Dutch Lover\, under the direction of Stewart Ross. \nIt’s a long play with a massive cast\, and attempting to read it with 13 people soon exposed how complicated and farcical it is. Prepare for a riot of mistaken identities\, love triangles\, less-than-impressive men\, scheming maids and young ladies who manage to marry their beaus in the face of their families’ opposition. Plus some stolen infants\, the revelation of whose true identities narrowly avoids some incestuous complications. The play is also phenomenally rude about the Dutch\, which in the context of the third Anglo-Dutch War is hardly surprising. \nOur unanimous verdict on the best line of the play: “[T]his marrying I do not like. ʼTis like going a long voyage to sea. One seldom sees a new object. ʼTis still a deal of sea\, sea\, husband\, husband\, every day …”
