SUMMARY:Exhibition at The Beaney\, High Street\, Canterbury. ‘Canterbury’s Aphra Behn (1640-1689): Literature’s best kept secret’
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition celebrates the startling achievements of this daughter of London stage every season for over 50 years and a novella\, Oroonoko\, the first fiction in English to centre on a rebellion of enslaved Africans. The exhibition traces her story\, starting in a world where outspoken women might be punished\, via her spying trip to Antwerp in 1666\, to her glittering London career in the 1670s and 1680s.

SUMMARY:Aphra Behn wine\, made by Kentish vineyard Barsole
DESCRIPTION:It was a real pleasure to attend the Aphra Behn Society of Canterbury’s wine tasting earlier in October – one of many events planned for 2023/24 raising the profile of the pioneering Aphra and Canterbury as her birthplace. Expert Clive Barlow guided us through a selection of wonderful Kent wines\, perfectly matched with Behn readings by the society’s Hilary Scott and Patricia Hodges. The audience was a mixture of Behn enthusiasts and wine lovers.  \n80% of those who completed the feedback had not attended an Aphra related event before and the vast majority went away more knowledgeable about Behn’s life and work. Feedback comments highlighted Behn as a pioneer\, source of local pride and her value to Canterbury in terms of promoting positive diversity and potential to encourage visitors to the city. \nIt was an incredible informative and convivial afternoon. I can particularly recommend the local Pinot Gris. Chin chin!

SUMMARY:Inspirational Women of Kent co-creation workshop
DESCRIPTION:A fantastic visit back to Canterbury and the Beaney House of Art and Knowledge to spend the day researching inspirational Kent women through the ages. Led by digital humanities expert Dr Catriona Cooper and facilitator and content curator Helen Crutcher\, the group took the life of Aphra Behn\, plus a guided tour of the Beaney’s collections\, as a starting point for the creation of our own biographies of local women who lived remarkable lives. It was a brilliant atmosphere and wonderful to have my head down researching\, alongside others who brought such a range of local knowledge.  \nAphra’s story was new to many of the group\, as was that of Mary Moders\, self-appointed ‘German princess’\, born in Canterbury in 1642. You can find out more on the map! The stories we worked on ranged across the centuries\, covering contemporary artists\, actors\, sportswomen alongside historical figures. The map created lets you explore key places in the histories of these individuals and you can move across it and find out who is connected with each location or select women from the menu. It is a living map and will continue to grow\, putting a well-deserved spotlight on the wonderful inspirational women of Kent. \n

SUMMARY:Aphra Behn Prayer-Poetry Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Aphra Behn may be best known for her plays\, but she also wrote some fascinating poetry – and not all of it as risqué as her reputation suggests. On 18 November 2023\, Professor Elaine Hobby and Dr Astrid Stilma led a workshop on Behn’s intriguing poem ‘A Paraphrase upon the Lord’s Prayer’\, first published in 1685. The workshop was part of the Being Human Festival\, the UK’s national festival of the Humanities\, whose theme this year was ‘Women Making Sense.’ \nAround 20 people gathered in St Paul’s Church\, Canterbury – the church where Aphra’s parents were married – for a lively discussion about an extraordinary woman writer making sense of her Anglican faith and her doubts about religious authority. The main conclusion: the poem leaves us with more questions than it answers. Some found it quite traditional\, others felt sure it’s tongue-in-cheek – after all\, the speaker does suggest God should find it relatively easy to forgive her trespasses because ‘Of all my crimes\, the breach of all thy laws / Love\, soft bewitching love has been the cause’ and suggests that we’re liable to fall into temptation because God himself made this world’s temptations so enticing! One thing on which the workshop participants unanimously agreed: ‘A Paraphrase Upon the Lord’s Prayer’ is a fascinating poem that shows us a different side to Aphra Behn while her unique\, irreverent voice still shines through.
